KANDY

I was left broken, my heart beating a little bit harder in order to survive. I’d tried picking up the pieces, but when it came to Cane, it was hard to let go.

The way we touched was special and we promised to never forget one another. I had him right in the palm of my hand–thought everything was perfect–but in the blink of an eye, he was gone, leaving me with no choice but to pretend that what we had never existed.

CANE

She was off-limits to me, but I pushed the boundaries anyway. Now, I was stuck between a rock and a hard place, my career slowly but surely slipping out of my grasp, and ghosts from my past returning to make things much more complicated.

My love life had never meant so much to me until I met Kandy.

After being knocked down and left stranded, any sane man would have stayed far away, but I wasn’t sane–not by a long shot.

I knew reality was harsh, and the universe had all the odds stacked against us. Despite it all, nothing was going stop me from making her mine again.

And if someone tried, they were going to have to go over my dead body first.

Excerpt:

Like he’d promised, he was waiting for me up front. He was standing in front of the exit with his hands tucked in his pockets and a pair of sunglasses covering his eyes, like he’d just arrived. I spotted him before he could see me, and my heart sped up several notches the closer I got.

Seeing him, reminded me of when I was a little girl and was looking at him for the first time. Though I was hopeless, the sunglasses shielding his eyes and his bad boy demeanor did something to me—whirled me up inside and drove me crazy.

He looked around for a moment like he could feel someone watching him, and when he was facing my direction, he put on a warm, welcoming smile, pulling the sunglasses off. He opened his arms and I dragged my suitcase on it’s wheels, rushing into them.

I hugged him hard and squeezed so tight. This hug was exactly what I needed. No questions, just outpouring love. My parents would have hounded me first, questioned me later, and maybe hug me after making the same “mistake” twice. And that was a big maybe. But Cane was no mistake. He couldn’t be.

Why would he have been brought into my life, if we weren’t meant to be something?

It didn’t make any sense.

There had to be a reason for this.

There had to be happiness at the end of our story.

Review

Rating: 5 stars

Ok. wow. This book picks up directly from where Wanting Mr Cane left off so if you haven’t read that yet and this series appeals to you then step away from the review because this review is spoiler central about book 1 in the Cane series.

This book is a lot darker than Wanting Mr Cane and it deals with some intense subjects such as child and spousal abuse (which was briefly covered in Wanting Mr Cane but becomes more relevant in Breaking Mr Cane), drug and alcohol abuse and mental health issues.

This book begins with Kandy and Cane’s forbidden romance out in the open after the evil Kelly sent a pen drive containing a recording of them in a compromising position to her parents (and had many other copies made.) She had kept her crazy under a bushel for most of Wanting Mr Cane but throughout this book Cane is under no illusion of the type of person that she is.

Kandy goes off to college knowing that her father is devastated, he mother isn’t much better and Cane is hospital after her father attacked him. She tries to throw herself into college life, meeting new people and going through the motions of having fun but inside it is a different story.

I don’t want to go any further into book details because this really is a corker of a novel and it deserves to be read and enjoyed.

This series has taken a different course to the one that I anticipated when I picked up Wanting Mr Cane but it is different in a good way. More intense, more intricate and more than a ‘taboo romance’ I didn’t see coming most of what happens in this impressive roller-coaster. (well roller-coaster if they could also go sideways. It’s really more of a spin cycle and you never know what direction the story is going to take!)

One word of warning: Shanora Williams does like to leave you hanging and desperate to get your hands on the next instalment. I consider this both a good and bad thing. I am inpatient by nature but if the next instalment is as amazing as the first two then it will be worth the wait!

Thanks to Shanora Williams and Social Butterfly PR for granting me an ARC copy of Breaking Mr Cane. This is my honest review.

Excerpt:

“That and taking a bullet for you is my job. I do it well. You must believe that, too, or you would have hired someone else.”
“You are one stubborn man. My grandfather’s mules could take
lessons from you. I’ll be out in ten minutes.” She whirled around and headed for her bathroom in the back, then shut the door.
Cutter couldn’t stop the smile from creeping across his face. Had
Shealyn just compared him to an ass?
He’d decided she had when she emerged in a gauzy white dress trimmed in lace that accentuated the hint of gold in her sun-kissed skin. The thin straps clung to the tips of her shoulders, as if threatening to slip down at any moment, and played peekaboo with her blond tresses. The garment stretched tight across her breasts, the three little buttons keeping the bodice shut threatening to pop if she made a too-
sudden move. The flimsy thing also ended well above her knees and, with her white cowboy boots, framed her sleek thighs.
Cutter felt his thoughts evaporate and his tongue go dry. The rest of him turned stone hard. He shouldn’t think twice about Shealyn as a woman, but so far, that seemed to be asking the impossible.
“You’re wearing that?”
She cocked her head at him. “What’s wrong with it? Or are you suggesting this dress is somehow dangerous?”
Her challenge and sass turned him on even more. Hell, everything about her did.
But he was way out of line. The dress portrayed precisely the image she’d cultivated. It was sweetly sexy. Wearing it, Shealyn looked like a gorgeous siren with western flair… and a hint of innocence. The problem—and obviously all the lust—was his alone.
“I’m making you aware that you may attract unwanted male attention in public. But I’ll handle it,” Cutter promised, meeting her gaze and doing his best to shutter the desire burning through his blood.
She stared back, a hint of a smile playing at her lips. “You think I’ll attract male attention, huh?”
Was she fishing for compliments? Her green eyes danced with something he couldn’t put his finger on. Mischief? Flirtation? No. Why would she come on to him when she was already in a high-profile relationship? Shealyn didn’t strike him as one of those women who got off on yanking a man’s chain. Then again, he didn’t know her well.
Whatever she was up to, he couldn’t rise to her bait.
“Ms. West?” He kept his voice as inflectionless and polite as possible.
“Mr. Bryant.” Another hint of playful dare rang in her tone.
“I told you, it’s Cutter.”
“All right. Cutter.” She damn near sighed his name. “You going to answer my question?”
What the hell did she want him to say? Some reckless part of him he’d sworn he didn’t possess itched to simply show her, cross the half- dozen steps between them, take that wisp of a garment in his grip, and tear it off. Once he’d exposed every inch of her body, he would love to put his hands on her, his mouth on her, so she understood what a dress like that did to him. Hell, what she did to him.
A sudden pounding on the door broke the moment between them.
“You ready yet?” Tower shouted from outside.
Despite the man’s insistence, she didn’t move to admit him or even answer. She just stared Cutter’s way. “I’m waiting.”
Cutter searched for a discreet reply. “The dress reveals more skin than it hides. It might give a man the wrong idea.”
“What idea is that?”
The kinds of ideas racing through his head with juggernaut speed and jetting blood south to his cock. “That he can touch you. That he can have you.”
“Is that what this dress makes you think?”
The flash of her eyes and the husky voice she used to ask the question torqued him up. She was definitely fishing for his reaction. Was she hoping he bit because she needed the ego stroke… or was she baiting her hook and tossing it his way because she was actually hoping to reel him in?
“What I think about the dress doesn’t matter.”
“Then why does it bother you? You saw me in less on set.”
Oh, he’d seen her damn near naked. Hour after hour of exposed skin had taunted him with all the beauty a country boy like him would never have the right to possess. But this dress appealed to his deepest fantasies. She looked wholesome yet sensual, a woman aware of her appeal. A female who knew exactly what she wanted in her man…

Review By Tasha

Rating 5 stars.

I was completely invested in this book from the first page and became more engrossed by the minute.

A fast paced romantic suspense that has it all sexy bodyguard, stunning starlet, danger, lies, adventure and did I mention sexy bodyguard.

My poor Kindle was virtually smoking with the action coming from the story and the rate that I turned the pages.

Shayla Black delivered in every way with this book. Romance, suspense, tension, devoted to pleasure delivered it all.

Thanks to Shayla Black, NetGalley and Social Butterfly PR for granting me an ARC copy of Devoted to Pleasure. This is my honest review.

Excerpt:

I shriek the minute we step foot in the penthouse when he sweeps my feet out from under me, tossing me over his shoulder. “What are you doing, you crazy ass?!” I laugh, beating my fists against his back as he strides with purpose through the living area.

“Be quiet, woman,” he jokes, slapping my butt. “Trust me, you won’t be complaining in a few minutes.”

And he’s right. He strips my clothes off, tantalizingly slowly, before pushing me back on the bed and devouring every part of me with his mouth. When his head lowers to the apex of my thighs, I squirm with anticipation, shouting his name as his tongue goes to town on me. My orgasm catches me off guard, sweeping through me with urgency, and I’m shouting his name repeatedly as waves of ecstasy wash over me. Flipping me over onto my stomach, he pulls my knees up and spreads me, slapping my ass cheeks firmly, and warmth leaks from my still-quivering pussy. “Are you sore after last night baby?” he asks, as I hear the tear of a condom wrapper.

“Nope,” I lie. “Give it to me hard, stud. Just how I like it.”

He slams into me without warning and I scream.

“I love how enthusiastic you are,” he grunts, fucking me in sharp, quick thrusts. “And I love how you shout out my name when you come. It really fucking turns me on.”

“Oh, God,” I moan as he plunges deep, hitting the right spot.

“Not God, baby. Just … Levi.”

“Well, just Levi,” I say a couple of hours later. “I think I’m well and truly fucked.” I try to move but I can’t. “I can’t feel my legs anymore. I think you broke me.”

He chuckles. “I can’t feel my cock. I think you rode me to death.”

Review

Rating 4 stars

I really enjoyed reading Incognito by Siobhan Davis. It wasn’t your basic rock star romance or your basic college romance. It squished the two together in a blender and made a wonderful mix of sweet, sexy, suspenseful and had a really good twist at the end that totally bamboozled me.

There were some wonderful characters, Dakota’s circle of friends, so different yet so caring and fun and the wonderful head of security Devin and his delightful family. There were some tense moments, and some moments when I cussed out the male protagonist but admittedly I have a soft spot for him. There were a healthy dose of people that, if this were a pantomime, we would hiss every time they got on stage.

I really did love the ending of Incognito and felt like I’d been taken on a fabulous ride. All in all this was a solidly paced, interesting, tense at times, romantic journey.

Thanks to Siobhan Davis and Social Butterfly PR for granting me an ARC copy of Incognito. This is my honest review.

Watching You started well, except that for my taste, there were too many characters and this led to some confusion for me. The characters are relevant to the plot but it was overwhelming.

The story initially paced too slowly for my liking, however it picked up as the Watching You progressed and there was plenty of suspense and tension and this really did manage to keep me guessing, thinking I had it sussed then realising wrong! So back to guessing.

The plot is strong and intense and for me it was a good read.  I really was impressed with how it kept me guessing and the surprising twists were impressively unforeseen.

Watching You get’s 3 stars as this is my average, liked it, well written, it just didn’t quiet suit me, score.

I would like to thank Random House UK, Cornerstone and NetGalley for the chance to read Watching you. This is my honest review.

Author: Jennifer Alsever

Narrator: Moira Todd

Series: Trinity Forest Series, Book 1

Publisher: Sawatch Publishing

Released: Sep. 7, 2017

Genre: Young Adult, Paranormal

Author Jennifer Alsever delivers an addictive story ideal for fans of The Uglies, We Were Liars, and Before I Fall about a teen grieving over her parent’s tragic death who becomes entangled with a mysterious forest teeming with urban legends of strange disappearances and witchcraft.

Ember Trouve used to be alive, driven to become a musician and on a path to college. That was before her parents died. One day, after venturing into the fabled Trinity Forest, she goes missing. Now, Ember must confront the truth behind her parents’ death – or lose herself to the forest forever.

In this fresh and compelling novel, Jennifer Alsever creates a paranormal world of loss, mystery, love, and survival as Ember searches for escape – and a path back to herself. Ember Burning is the first installment of the three-book Trinity Forest series.

A teenager still lives inside author Jennifer Alsever. She spent two decades as a professional journalist, contributing to such publications as Fortune Magazine, the New York Times, Inc Magazine and the Wall Street Journal, before letting her imagination run wild in 2016. The result is Ember’s story told in the three-book Trinity Forest Series, her first published fiction work.
When not absorbed in writing, Alsever enjoys a good hike, doing some yoga, hanging with her boys, some moguls on skis, a rigorous mountain bike ride or indulging in the simple pleasures of life. Her favorites: untouched snow, frozen chocolate chips, savasina on a yoga mat and yes, bowls of pan fried brussels sprouts. Jennifer is working on her upcoming novel, Psychic Monkeys, to be released in 2019.

Ember is completely lost after the tragic death of her beloved parents, then Ember is just lost! Will Ember face her painful truths straight on or will Trinity Forest become her forever?

I don’t often listen to books in the Young Adult Genre but I am a huge fan of the Paranormal genre so I figured that I would give this trilogy a go. Jennifer Alsever has made me so happy that I decided to step out of my comfort zone.

I am so glad that I chose to listen to Ember Burning and I cannot wait to dive into book 2. The writing is intense and engaging, the story has fantastic flow and makes you want to binge listen! This is such a well written and fantastically envisioned plot and I do think that it could be enjoyed by people that wouldn’t usually go for a book in the Young Adult genre.

Moira Todd has done a wonderful job of narrating an emotional, challenging, tense story. Her characterisation is spot on, the voices suit the characters so well and really draw you in. Her vocal talents are such that you feel the tension, fear, emotion while she still maintains the recognisable voices for the stories characters. I cannot wait to start listening to Trinity Forest Book two- Oshun Rising.

I received these audiobooks as part of my participation in a blog tour with Audiobookworm Promotions. The tour is being sponsored by Jennifer Alsever. The gifting of these audiobooks did not affect my opinion of them

  • Tell us about the process of turning your book into an audiobook.
    • As an avid audiobook fan, I knew when I finished my trilogy that I wanted my books to be an audiobook. But finding the right voice was going to be key. I went into ACX, Audible’s back-end system for authors, and I listened to dozens of sample narrators until I found Moira Todd, an actress in Oregon. I wrote her an email and said, ‘You are Ember!’ She had a gorgeous voice, youthful with the perfect amount of snark and authenticity plus, I didn’t know it at the time, but she could sing. Working with Moira has been a dream, as she sent me samples along the way, and I ate the chapters up as we went.
  • Was a possible audiobook recording something you were conscious of while writing?
    • No. While I was writing, I was conscious only of the voice on the page. I was fully engrossed in the logistics of the writing and pacing and ensuring readers could see what I saw in my mind’s eye.
  • How did you select your narrator?
    • I listened to Moira’s sample on ACX, the backend of Audible, and loved her voice. She had a youthful voice that exhibited the kind of intellect, angst, snark, strength and sweetness of my main character Ember. When I heard her audition, I emailed her saying “You are Ember!”
  • How closely did you work with your narrator before and during the recording process?
    • Moira gave me periodic updates on her editing and chapters as she finished them. We collaborated, but really, Moira just nailed it with no revision requests on my part.
  • Did you give them any pronunciation tips or special insight into the characters?
    • I didn’t give her insight into characters– nothing more than what was on the page. I gave her some pronunciation tips when asked, places and names and some weird Egyptian words.
  • Were there any real life inspirations behind your writing?
    • I drew on my experiences walking around the real-life town of Leadville and the scenery of the Colorado mountains where I live, plus took nuggets of scenery from my past visits to Utah, California and L.A. I also peppered in small bits and pieces of real stories from people gathered and heard over the years. To get into the teen head, I invited a group of seniors at a local high school for pizza when I was writing the book, and I listened to them talk. I got a lot of good perspective and a few nuggets of stories from them. They were so generous with their stories and time. I wouldn’t have been able to do it without them. The general plot, too, is taken from real-life theories from crazy websites about the Annunaki, energy vortexes and Egyptian mysticism. I did a lot of research and drew on interviews with people who had experienced what Ember did– mainly a friend who lost her parents as a teen.
  • How do you manage to avoid burn-out? What do you do to maintain your enthusiasm for writing?
    • When I get stuck, I give myself time and space to do something else. I hike, read, ski, watch smart TV shows or I write other things. I don’t feel like I honestly can get burned from writing. I was obsessed with my story and it just flowed out of my fingers. It’s my most favorite thing, outside of my family and friends.
  • Are you an audiobook listener? What about the audiobook format appeals to you?
    • I am an audiobook listener for sure. As a slow reader, I love listening to a book while I get other things done, whether it’s chores around the house, a long drive or a hike. I am very picky about the narrator of the books I consume, and the voice can make it or break it for me. I’d listened to enough YA books that had similar voices or tones I liked, and I knew Moira would be perfect for my series. She had a voice I personally could enjoy hearing for hours.
  • Is there a particular part of this story that you feel is more resonating in the audiobook performance than in the book format?
    • Ember is a singer-song writer, and so that was a challenge for me to write lyrics to songs. Some of the lyrics had a loose tune in my head but not really. It was so fun to hear Moira take the lyrics, make a song and then sing it in the audio recording. She has a beautiful singing voice.
  • What do you say to those who view listening to audiobooks as “cheating” or as inferior to “real reading”?
    • I say a story is a story, heard or read. People say they don’t have time to read. So if listening is an easier way to dive into a imaginary story without sitting in front a screen, then go for it.
  • In your opinion, what are the pros and cons of writing a stand-alone novel vs. writing a series?
    • Pros of a series: You have more time to develop a storyline and a character, and you can fall more deeply into that world. People can binge your books just like they can binge watch TV.
    • Pros of standalone: You’re done with one and can dig into another entirely new idea next.
    • Cons of a series: Some people hate series and so maybe they read one book and may grumble about having to read another two to find out all the answers. It’s harder to market the other books in the series because they’re a continuation of the story so you end up having to tout your first book over and over, when you really might be proud of the writing or the story in the second and third too.
    • Cons of standalone: Sometimes, it can be hard to get everything you want in the book and it feels rushed. As a reader and an author, you’re sad to leave those characters behind and close the book to move on to the next idea.
  • Have any of your characters ever appeared in your dreams?
    • The genesis of my book came from a dream. I was running through a forest, but I wasn’t myself. I was someone else. I came to a gate, went inside and met three of my characters, Tre, Lilly and Zoe, and after spending time there, they whispered how I could never go home, despite the world spinning forward on the outside.
    • When I woke up, I told my son about the dream because it was so vivid and striking to me, and he told me to turn it into a novel. So I did.

  • Waffle fries or curly fries?
    • Curly fries for sure. They were my downfall in college.
  • GIF with a hard g or soft g?
    • Hard G. Though it’s enough of a conundrum I try to avoid saying the word out loud.
  • Fantasy or science-fiction?
    • Sci-fi. I don’t like reading about queens and goblins, and must prefer to consider aliens and future tech worlds. I actually love contemporary with a little twist of magic.
  • Superman or Batman?
    • Batman for sure. Though he would probably get on my nerves after awhile with that voice.
  • Text message or call?
    • I unfortunately prefer text messages because I like to get to the point quickly.
  • Pancakes or waffles?
    • Waffles because they’re not something I’d make at home. Making me hungry as I answer this.
  • Doctor Who or the Walking Dead?
    • Meh to both. Walking Dead is beloved by so many people but it’s too gruesome for me and a little depressing. Dr. Who is a little too old-school.
  • TV Shows or movies?
    • Depends. I’m loving some Netflix and Amazon originals right now, and I appreciate the thoughtful character development you can do with a show. But I am always a fan of a good movie.
  • Facebook or Twitter?
    • Facebook. Twitter feels very impersonal to me.
  • Alice in Wonderland or Robinson Crusoe?
    • Alice in Wonderland! One fantasy I do like.
  • Being too warm or too cold?
    • I am always too cold. Hands, feet. I wear a puffy coat when I work during the winter. Isn’t that weird?
  • Netflix or Hulu?
    • Netflix. I’ve been a loyal Netflixer since the days of DVDs 15 years ago. They almost lost me with their crappy online offerings– until they started developing their own killer content.
  • Work Hard or Play Hard?
    • I like both. I love what I do, so it doesn’t feel like work. But you got to get out and enjoy life since it’s flying by too fast.
  • Passenger or Driver?
    • Passenger for sure. I love writing in the car while my husband drives. Naps. Those are good too.
  • Amusement Park or Day at the Beach?
    • Beach. Gotta get your nature.
  • Honesty or Other’s Feelings?
    • Not sure I get this one, but I’m all about honesty. I’m an open book.
  • Movie at Home or Movie at the Theater?
    • I love the theater. Popcorn. Gotta get my popcorn.

Knowing You -highres (1).JPG

Synopsis: Under suspicion for a crime she watched him commit, Lana will pay for her silence. Her new lawyer strikes a deal, sending her to a boarding school in Vermont. It’s supposed to be a second chance. An escape from a dead-end life in Sherling. Except Lana doesn’t want to leave those who depend on her behind.

Lana is convinced she has nothing in common with the sons and daughters of celebrities and politicians who attend Blackwood School. But she soon finds out, that they’re all delinquents… just like her. Theirs is a world of contrived headlines and publicity facades, and Lana’s unabated honesty is a keen contrast to their lie-filled lives. She finds herself with new friends, just by telling the truth.

But not everyone is welcoming. Someone is out to destroy Lana, and she has no idea why. The longer she stays at Blackwood, the more dangerous it becomes for her and everyone she cares about. And it will only get worse when Lana discovers the truth.

Meet Rebecca:
Optimism seeps from every pore of my body. I truly believe that what’s supposed to happen… will! In that regard, I don’t know how to give up; it’s not part of my biological make up.

I’m a passionate (and some would say, overly enthusiastic) person. I learn by doing (and have been burned more times that I’d like to admit), but I will always throw my entire self into whatever I do – fail or succeed.

I think this is evident when I write, leaving nothing behind and spilling it all out on the pages. I give it all to my readers – love it or hate it.

The path I’m on is very often my own, veering off the beaten path at the sight of something more interesting or captivating, getting caught in the vines and thorns in order to experience the beauty and intrigue others often pass by. And I always meet the most interesting people along the way…
