Breaking Mr. Cane (Cane 2) by Shanora Williams. Excerpt and Review.

Breaking Mr. Cane, the gripping, steamy follow up to the bestselling forbidden romance, Wanting Mr. Cane, from New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Shanora Williams is available NOW!

I was left broken, my heart beating a little bit harder in order to survive. I’d tried picking up the pieces, but when it came to Cane, it was hard to let go.

The way we touched was special and we promised to never forget one another. I had him right in the palm of my hand–thought everything was perfect–but in the blink of an eye, he was gone, leaving me with no choice but to pretend that what we had never existed.

She was off-limits to me, but I pushed the boundaries anyway. Now, I was stuck between a rock and a hard place, my career slowly but surely slipping out of my grasp, and ghosts from my past returning to make things much more complicated.

My love life had never meant so much to me until I met Kandy.

After being knocked down and left stranded, any sane man would have stayed far away, but I wasn’t sane–not by a long shot.

I knew reality was harsh, and the universe had all the odds stacked against us. Despite it all, nothing was going stop me from making her mine again.

And if someone tried, they were going to have to go over my dead body first.

Like he’d promised, he was waiting for me up front. He was standing in front of the exit with his hands tucked in his pockets and a pair of sunglasses covering his eyes, like he’d just arrived. I spotted him before he could see me, and my heart sped up several notches the closer I got.

Seeing him, reminded me of when I was a little girl and was looking at him for the first time. Though I was hopeless, the sunglasses shielding his eyes and his bad boy demeanor did something to me—whirled me up inside and drove me crazy.

He looked around for a moment like he could feel someone watching him, and when he was facing my direction, he put on a warm, welcoming smile, pulling the sunglasses off. He opened his arms and I dragged my suitcase on it’s wheels, rushing into them.

I hugged him hard and squeezed so tight. This hug was exactly what I needed. No questions, just outpouring love. My parents would have hounded me first, questioned me later, and maybe hug me after making the same “mistake” twice. And that was a big maybe. But Cane was no mistake. He couldn’t be.

Why would he have been brought into my life, if we weren’t meant to be something?

It didn’t make any sense.

There had to be a reason for this.

There had to be happiness at the end of our story.

Ok. wow. This book picks up directly from where Wanting Mr Cane left off so if you haven’t read that yet and this series appeals to you then step away from the review because this review is spoiler central about book 1 in the Cane series.

This book is a lot darker than Wanting Mr Cane and it deals with some intense subjects such as child and spousal abuse (which was briefly covered in Wanting Mr Cane but becomes more relevant in Breaking Mr Cane), drug and alcohol abuse and mental health issues.

This book begins with Kandy and Cane’s forbidden romance out in the open after the evil Kelly sent a pen drive containing a recording of them in a compromising position to her parents (and had many other copies made.) She had kept her crazy under a bushel for most of Wanting Mr Cane but throughout this book Cane is under no illusion of the type of person that she is.

Kandy goes off to college knowing that her father is devastated, he mother isn’t much better and Cane is hospital after her father attacked him. She tries to throw herself into college life, meeting new people and going through the motions of having fun but inside it is a different story.

I don’t want to go any further into book details because this really is a corker of a novel and it deserves to be read and enjoyed.

This series has taken a different course to the one that I anticipated when I picked up Wanting Mr Cane but it is different in a good way. More intense, more intricate and more than a ‘taboo romance’ I didn’t see coming most of what happens in this impressive roller-coaster. (well roller-coaster if they could also go sideways. It’s really more of a spin cycle and you never know what direction the story is going to take!)

One word of warning: Shanora Williams does like to leave you hanging and desperate to get your hands on the next instalment. I consider this both a good and bad thing. I am inpatient by nature but if the next instalment is as amazing as the first two then it will be worth the wait!

Thanks to Shanora Williams and Social Butterfly PR for granting me an ARC copy of Breaking Mr Cane. This is my honest review.

Juliette Collins is privileged and isolated from the world by her over-protective father. She thinks she knows the truth about her history until a file in her father’s safe reveals she has sisters she never knew about. A family she’s never met. Betrayed, she realizes there’s a life waiting for her outside the walls of her daddy’s New York City penthouse and Juliet is determined to live it. Against her father’s wishes, she heads to a small beach community to meet her siblings… and finds herself way out of her depth instead.

In the personal protection business, Braden Clark thinks nothing of taking on a job to watch over a city girl in town for the summer. If her father wants to know his daughter is safe, it’s no problem and an easy way of earning a paycheck. Except Braden doesn’t count on falling for the sheltered Juliette. Watching her experience her firsts, getting an apartment, finding a job, meeting up with her lost sisters, soon Braden’s brand of protection becomes a little too personal. He’s mixing business with pleasure and lying to a woman he’s coming to care deeply about.

Sexual attraction burns bright between them and Braden is by her side as she finds herself, her family, and what it means to love… but what happens when she discovers his secret? That he’s been paid to watch over her all along?

“You have a customer. First booth.” Grace tipped her head toward the front of the restaurant. ““And he’s a cute one. Single, too,” Grace said with a wink.

“So this is what small-town living is like? You know everyone?”

She nodded. “And everyone gets to know you. Now shoo.” She waggled her fingers, indicating Juliette should head up front and serve her customer.

She put a smile on her face and strode toward the first table, stopping short when she came upon him.

He had thick, brown wavy hair, with a strong jaw and hazel eyes, and Grace hadn’t done him justice calling him cute. He was downright gorgeous. A navy tee shirt accented his muscular frame. He had to work out, given the flex and pull of his biceps as he picked up a glass of water and took a long sip.

The men she knew in New York were flimsy compared to this hunky specimen. They wore suits their bodies didn’t fill out and had weak facial profiles. This guy was everything she didn’t know to want, but she was certain he’d be in her dreams from now on.

She swallowed hard and approached, gripping the coffeepot in her hand. “Good morning.”

He looked up and his eyes locked on hers. His mossy-green-brown gaze bored into hers and held on so long the stare felt like a warm caress.

“Good morning to you, pretty lady.”

At his gruff words, a warm flush rose to her cheeks. “Coffee?” she asked, lifting the carafe, her hand suddenly trembling.

“Sure. Thank you.”

She somehow managed to pour the liquid without spilling, but she filled the coffee too high and it seeped over the top, leaking first on the table and then onto his lap.

He jerked as the hot liquid hit his pants.

“Oh my God, I’m so sorry.” She put the carafe down with a clatter, picked up the nearest napkin, and began blotting his shirt and his lap, pressing down to soak up the liquid, only to come into contact with his hard, thick– “Oh!” She yanked her hand back, further mortified.

“You could keep going,” he said, eyes twinkling with laughter.

She wanted to crawl beneath the nearest table and stay there. “I’m so sorry. Did it burn you?” she asked, her cheeks flaming.

“No. It must have been cooler than you realized. I’m fine. Really.”

“Is everything okay over here?” Grace asked, walking over, obviously concerned.

Juliette stepped up, taking responsibility. “I–“

“Just a little accident,” the man said. “It’s no big deal.”

A customer called Grace’s name and she walked away, the incident forgotten. Juliette wished she could put it behind her as easily.

“How about we introduce ourselves, considering you had your hand on my–“

“Juliette,” she said quickly, before he could finish his sentence. “Juliette Collins.”

“Braden Clark,” he said with a knowing grin that made her weak in the knees.

The man’s impact was potent.

“Nice to meet you, Juliette.”

“Same,” she murmured. “Now can I get you a fresh cup of coffee?”

“That would be great.”

She gently picked up the overflowed cup and headed for the kitchen, returning to him with an empty mug and a towel to clean the table. A few careful minutes of serving later, he had his coffee and she was back to her duties, feeling his gaze on her as she worked. His name is Braden Clark and he’s a regular.”

Juliette picked up the coffee carafe. “I’ve got it.”

I  enjoyed reading Freed. This is the third in a series but is a standalone and I came to this book as a new reader in the series.

I liked Juliette, she was kind and considerate but so naive, this is in no small part to her over protective (controlling) father, who let her think he was all that she had in the world because her mother had died. He deceived her and used his health to keep a tight rein on her. When she found out that her mother was alive and that she had two sisters and found the courage to leave her father and seek out her family he had her followed and monitored.

The private investigator that he hired- Braden Clark – felt attracted to Juliette the moment that he saw her picture and as the got to know each other, a relationship developed between them. Braden does step back and give Juliette as much privacy as possible and does not report her every little move to her father (in fact he reports the bare minimum) but still, it isn’t great that she left her father’s deceit only to find another man who was deceiving her from the beginning.

Braden is torn by wanting to spend time around Juliette, but also wanting her to have the chance to spread her wings for the first time in her life. Of course there is also the issue that his father is unwell and he doesn’t want to be a burden and clip her wings before she has had chance to fly.

In time Braden and Juliette’s relationship grows and the deceit weighs heavier on Branden. I can understand why Braden did not confess all upon meeting Juliette (and continued taking payment from her father) of course, he couldn’t he needed the money and he didn’t know her, she was an assignment. (His own father is unwell and will need to move into a care home and Braden knows he needs to finance that)

I did really enjoy seeing Juliette getting to know her wonderful sisters, Phoebe and Halley. She did not know about them but they knew about her and had missed having her in their lives. They were thrilled when she found them. Juliette didn’t just gain a relationship with her sisters she gained a larger extended family who welcomed her into their lives. (I wish that I had read the sister’s stories before this as they both have interesting back-stories)

I liked the relationships that Juliette developed over the course of the book and that this was more than a straight-forward romance.

I liked that Juliette took the opportunities to do new things and get to know herself while experiencing a life away from her oppressive father.

I did find the ending a little predictable and that is why Freed did not get a higher rating from me, however it was still an enjoyable, well written, relatively quick read.

Just to put this rating into perspective I enjoyed this enough to wish that I had read the previous books in this series and I do look forward to reading Dream. I really like the characters and how developed they are so I would still recommend this book.

Until We Are Gone, an all-new Standalone Emotional Romance by Gia Riley is coming July 30th!!

I wanted a family with Cash.

We had dreams –building a house, kids, a dog, and, yes, even the white picket fence.

Or so I’m told.

I don’t remember anything about my husband. Not the wedding or the vows we shared.

The past ten years were erased and with time, they’re supposed to come back.

But this isn’t your typical case of amnesia

What if I’m not supposed to remember?

What if I was meant to forget?

Maybe I don’t want my old life back.

Because if the accident hadn’t happened, I wouldn’t have uncovered the truth.

Losing my memory wasn’t tragic.

Losing my memory was fate.

The man grabs my hand and laces his fingers with mine, careful not to jostle the IV. Nothing about his hand is familiar, and I’m left wondering if it’s okay to be touching at all.

“Who are you?” I ask him, wondering why he still hasn’t told me his name. If he’s someone who saved me, then I want to know. I need to know. “Are you the pilot?”

He sucks in a breath, and the tears flow harder down his cheeks. There’s a long, uncomfortable pause, and he barely blinks.

A few seconds later, he clears his throat and says, “Cash. I’m Cash. Your husband.”

I search his face for anything familiar. A dimple. A wrinkle. Maybe a freckle. But nothing about him triggers a single memory. I should feel more than this. I should have love for the man I married. I’m not sure how long ago, but we exchanged vows. Vows I don’t remember. And I’m sure I wore a white dress, probably my dream dress, and I don’t even know if it was made of lace or satin. My first Holy Communion dress was an expensive chiffon, and I hated that itchy material, so I’m sure it couldn’t have been chiffon.

Cash brushes his finger down the side of my face, chasing away a tear. I didn’t realize I was crying.

“I think I want to be alone,” I whisper.

He pauses and then lets go of me.

I wait for him to say something, but he just tucks closed fists into his pockets and stares at the floor.

Dating is hard.

I haven’t given up on finding my happily-ever-after, but in the age of swiping right and Netflix and chill, I’m wondering if everything is as temporary as my marriage turned out to be.

Truth is, there is one guy I can’t get my mind off of.

Roarke Baldwin has salt and pepper hair I’ve dreamed of running my hands through and I’m pretty sure that if I checked he really does have a six pack of abs underneath his suit. And I’ve always wondered what that stubble on his face would feel like between my thighs.

The problem? He’s the one man I hate more than my ex-husband…

His divorce attorney.

I press the numbers on my phone with shaky fingers, bringing the receiver up to my ear and release a deep breath.

He picks up after one ring. “I thought we were friends? Having your assistant call my assistant. Tsk. Tsk, Ms. Crowley.”

Aggravation fuses together every cell in my body until I become an impenetrable wall.

“First, we are not friends. Second, I would prefer to talk to you via our office phones.”

There’s a brief second of silence where he’s probably realizing I called him through my office line.

“Ahh… so now you have my number and I don’t have yours? That seems terribly unfair.”

“I didn’t realize you cared about fairness?” I lean back in my chair and cross my legs.

“You don’t know that much about me. It’s not like you know me intimately.” He lowers his voice on the last word and drags it out.

I roll my eyes, happy we’re not face-to-face so he can’t see the flush in my cheeks.

“You may have witnessed how I own the courtroom, but you know nothing about my private life. For instance, you don’t know if I like thrillers or comedies. Whether I prefer sorbet to ice cream or if I wear boxers or briefs.”

“I don’t need to know those things,” I say with frustration, shutting my eyes to rid the vision from my head of him in tight black boxer briefs—since that’s my preference.

“You want to know though.” A sexual innuendo pours out of his mouth and hits its mark between my thighs.

“There you go making assumptions about my wants.” I pick up my pen, shuffling through paperwork. Anything to distract me from this ache.

“I not only know what you want, I know what you need, Ms. Crowley.”

I smack my hand down on my desk. “Okay Rico Suave, let’s talk about this venue you have access to and keep the discussion of undergarments for another time.”

A beeping sound interrupts us.

“Hold all my calls please, Kristen.” Then nothing for a moment. “Sorry about that but you know how busy I am.”

“Yes, I’m sure destroying people’s lives takes a lot of time. So let’s stop the sexual innuendos and get down to business.”

“Let’s meet tonight. You frequent Torrio’s. I frequent Torrio’s. Let’s do something crazy and have a drink together.”

“I don’t need a drink at Torrio’s, Mr. Baldwin, I need a venue to house my gala. Now tell me your terms and I want the details of this venue you insist you can secure. I refuse to meet you until you supply me with that information.” I uncross my legs and tap my foot on the floor under me.

“So demanding. I like it.” I can hear him shuffling papers in the background. “I’ll have my assistant message your assistant with all the details of the venue. I’m sure it will be of your liking. Then we’ll meet tonight at Torrio’s. Seven sharp. Consider it our own personal happy hour.”

“I’m not committing to anything until I see the venue.”

“Then I’ll see you at seven.” The phone clicks and I stare at the receiver in my hand.

“Prick,” I murmur.

A knock sounds on my door.

Rating: 4 stars

I do enjoy a story with strong female characters and Happy Hour has a wonderful selection of different but equally strong and interesting women in the forefront of the story. Then of course there is the leading man, an alpha male and we all know how much I like one of those!

The couple that this book focuses on is a truly unusual match.

Hannah Crowley, born into money, but determined to make her own choices and not be someone’s trophy wife (as her mother intended her to be.) Intelligent and resourceful, Hannah runs her own successful foundation to help women (supported by her funny, supportive and no nonsense 2 friends Chelsea and Victoria.) She is a divorcee whose awful ex-husband got a lot from a marriage that he did not put a lot into, thanks in no small part to having an extremely effective and successful attorney .

The we have our alpha male, Roarke Baldwin, sexy, successful, a totally self made man who happens to also have been the attorney that helped Hannah’s ex do so well out of the divorce.

You could understand Hannah being less than inclined to give Roarke any of her time but Roarke isn’t who she assumes and when he makes her an offer she cannot refuse she begins to see that there is more to him than cold, efficient, divorce attorney.

I really did enjoy this story. Roarke may be an alpha male in every sense of the word but he is not a bullying type alpha, he is intelligent, successful, strong, respectful and sexy. You don’t need to bully your way through life when you have all of those attributes. He does not apologise to Hannah for representing her ex in their divorce, he explains that he simply achieved what the law stated his client was entitled to. (Not a great consolation when you are the one that the law has left with the short end of the straw)

Hannah’s trust has been damaged by her unfaithful, manipulative generally horrible ex and this does not make it easy for her to see any man as trustworthy and reliable, especially Rourke, with their complicated and conflicted history.

This was an enjoyable, well penned story that didn’t gloss over the issues that would naturally arise. Happy Hour has healthy dose of romance, personal development and humour. The characters are interesting and there are a few times that you think you have a predictable situation and find out that your don’t, which I do like in a book.

Piper Rayne have taken a initially impossible situation and examined the possibilities. Great stuff!

The Billionaire’s Wake-Up-Call Girl by Annika Martin – Review

The Billionaire’s Wake-Up-Call Girl by Annika Martin

Genre: Romantic Comedy

TBWUCG_ebook_amazon_kobo_ibooks (1)

SYNOPSIS: When my manager assigns me the task of finding a new wake up call service for our CEO, I think, how hard can this be?

Answer: practically impossible. It turns out that no wake-up call company in the world will take him on as a client. They’ve all had enough of his surly personality.

So in an effort not to lose my job, I secretly start making the calls myself, every day at 4:30 am sharp. OMG yes you read that right—four freaking thirty in the morning.

Confession: I’m not the nicest wake-up-call girl at that hour. Hello! Who wakes up before the roosters are even crowing? Luckily he doesn’t seem to mind my get-your-ass-out-of-bed attitude.

Day by day we’re becoming closer, and the calls start turning hot, like pay-by-the-minute hot and oh-so-wild. Snuggled under the covers with the moonlight streaming in the windows, we divulge our secrets to each other, but the one thing that he can never find out is that the sexy vixen who wakes him up every morning is just the lowly assistant who wears frumpy dresses. I can only imagine his disappointment.

Now he wants to take me out on a date and he’s scouring Manhattan to find me. He’s an overachieving billionaire bent on a mission. How much longer can I keep up this charade?

Rating 4 stars

The Billionaire’s Wake-Up-Call Girl was such a fun romance. It is the first book that I have read by Annika Martin and I am so impressed with her writing.

There is tension underlying with this story as Lizzie previously had her own popular bakery, She lost it and found out that she was in a heap of debt that her awful ex Mason had taken in her name and using the bakery as collateral, he hadn’t stopped there, loan sharks are turning up on her doorstep demanding money and pulling guns on her with a loan agreement with Masons signature and her own poorly forged one.

In order to pay the loan shark off and start her life over she takes a job working in the Social Media department at Vossameer ( A company owned by the brilliant, rich and reportedly coldly controlling, Theo Drummond) A company that had produced ground breaking wound treatment and the genius Theo feels has an even more pioneering invention just beyond his grasp.
Unfortunately for Lizzie she is working under a hideously bullying area manager who claims all triumphs as her own and belittles Lizzie and makes it seem that every stumbling block or hold up is due to Lizzie being inept and none too bright.

In order to get the payout Lizzie has to hold down this job for a few more days when she is instructed to find a wake up service for Theo. A task which is an apparent impossibility as no telephone service is willing to deal with Theo. Knowing that failure to complete this task would cost her the job (and money needed to clear the loan shark) Lizzie takes the dubious yet amusing decision to make the wake up calls herself.

Her wake up methods vary between hilariously abusive and steamy and Theo becomes determined to find out who ‘number 7’ (the only details she has fed to him) is.

The story has a little something for everyone who likes a little steam and laughter to their romance.

Yes it’s another billionaire story but he’s also sexy scientist which is a fun twist on a well known trope.

I highly recommend this enjoyable, funny story.

Christian Wolfe is Hollywood’s it actor. If the magazines are to be believed, he’s the sexiest man on earth. He’s preparing for the biggest movie role of his life, and his agent has booked him in a hot new ski lodge in Montana, tucked away from crazy fans. He can’t wait for the break.

But what Christian isn’t prepared for is Jenna. With a face that could easily co-star with him in a movie and her ambition to put her stamp on Cunningham Falls, he can’t stay away. But even more intriguing than her beauty is the fact that she’s not at all impressed with his celebrity status, only turned on by the man behind the fame.

The love they’ve found is perfect—but time is running out before real life intrudes. Can they survive with both their dreams—and hearts—intact?

“Come on in. This is your home away from home for the next four weeks.” I pause in the kitchen while he wanders through the space, looking outside, then taking in the blue kitchen cabinets, the large gas fireplace, and the comfortable furniture. “In the email correspondence, you asked for extra groceries to be stocked in the kitchen, and I’ve done that for you.”

“Thanks,” he says. “Where’s the closest Starbucks?”

I lean my hip on the counter and take a sip of my now lukewarm coffee. “In town.”

“Not on the mountain?”

“There’s a coffee shop up here, yes, but it doesn’t open until tomorrow when the season officially starts. I believe that’s the case for the restaurants up here, too.”

“So, no food up here?”

I shake my head. “No, but I’ll take pity on you and make you dinner tonight, if you like.”

His eyes narrow, suspicion written all over his face. “Why would you do that?”

I lean in as if I’m about to tell him a secret and whisper loudly, “Because I’m a nice person.”

He doesn’t smile.

“You can figure it out for yourself if you want to.” I shrug and lead him to the barn door that closes the small bedroom off the living space. “This is the bedroom on this level. There’s a bathroom here, too. I’ll show you the upstairs.”

I climb the stairs, certain that his eyes are on my ass, and hear him gasp when we reach the top.

“Cool, huh?”

“Beautiful,” he murmurs again, looking up.

Rating 4 stars

I completely enjoyed reading Kissing Jenna. This is book two in the Big Sky series and while I haven’t yet read book 1, Charming Hannah, I did feel this read fine without already having read Charming Hannah.

This is a sweet romance between two characters that I found thoroughly likeable. Jenna who lives in Cunningham Falls and and famous actor Christian who goes there to prepare for an acting part and learn to ski for the role. He has rented a property from Jenna with the intention of staying out of the limelight to focus on preparing for the part.

I really Jenna, she is loyal, fun, honest, strong and just a great character. I want to visit Cunningham Falls and stay in one of Jenna’s cottages.

Christian is lush (Not sure if this is a universal term so examples of other things that are lush include donuts, chocolate and hot book-boyfriends.) I liked him well enough from the start but he really grew on me as the story progressed.

There was instant attraction between Christian and Jenna and what follows is a really romantic time together that was enjoyable to read.

There is of course the looming end in sight. Christians life is making movies and Jenna’s life is running a successful business in Cunningham Falls.

You will of course have to read the book to find out more about this delightful romance but I can thoroughly recommend that you do. Kristen Proby has penned a wonderful, enjoyable romance. You won’t want this book to end.

Thanks to Kristen Proby and Social Butterfly PR for granting me an ARC copy of Kissing Jenna. This is my honest review.

Meet Kristen:

Kristen was born and raised in a small resort town in her beloved Montana. In her mid-twenties, she decided to stretch her wings and move to the Pacific Northwest, where she made her home for more than a dozen years.

During that time, Kristen wrote many romance novels and joined organizations such as RWA and other small writing groups. She spent countless hours in workshops, and more mornings than she can count up before the dawn so she could write before going to work. She submitted many manuscripts to agents and editors alike, but was always told no. In the summer of 2012, the self-publishing scene was new and thriving, and Kristen had one goal: to publish just one book. It was something she longed to cross off of her bucket list.

Not only did she publish one book, she’s since published close to thirty titles, many of which have hit the USA Today, New York Times and Wall Street Journal Bestsellers lists. She continues to self publish, best known for her With Me In Seattle and Boudreaux series, and is also proud to work with William Morrow, a division of HarperCollins, with the Fusion Series.

Kristen and her husband, John, make their home in her hometown of Whitefish, Montana with their two pugs and two cats.
